What is the Frontiers peer review model?
Frontiers uses a single-blind design during the review process. This means that reviewers know which authors will be able to provide a full review of their research and ensure that they can avoid any conflict of interest by accepting an invitation to review.
Frontiers also believes that reviewers deserve credit for their work in conducting reviews. We believe in transparency and fairness in the review process. For this reason, we release the names of all approving reviewers after each article we publish is published.
What to expect from our joint review
Our peer review platform is collaborative: it brings authors, reviewers, and the serving editor into a direct online dialogue, enabling fast iterations and facilitating consensus building. Editors and reviewers work with authors to improve the manuscript.
Independent review phase
When the reviewer accepts the review invitation, they receive an email with a link to the online review forum. In the review forum, they can access and review the manuscript and supporting documents. During this first review phase, the reviewers evaluate the article independently from each other and from the authors.
The review is completed by completing a review questionnaire available in the review forum and adapted to each type of article (original study, review, study protocol, clinical trial, etc.). By submitting a review report, the reviewer also sends his recommendation to the editor. At this stage, they can directly approve the manuscript and complete the review process if the manuscript meets our acceptance criteria.
Once all reviewers have submitted a review report, the serving editor is responsible for initiating the next phase of the process: Interactive Review. Even if the review reports are unfavorable to the authors, the collaborative forum kicks in to give the authors a chance to rebut.
Interactive review phase
When the interactive review phase is activated, authors are notified and can view and respond to reviewer comments in the review forum. Reviewers are notified when the author provides a complete response and/or resubmits the manuscript based on reviewer comments.
If necessary, reviewers can initiate a dialogue with the author to request additional clarifications or corrections. They can also access and comment on other reviewers' grade reports.
If the reviewer believes that the authors have made the necessary changes and the article is suitable for publication, they can approve it. Alternatively, if the authors are deemed to have failed or are unable to bring the article up to standard, the reviewers may recommend that it be rejected.

Reviewers are the key intermediary between the author and the editor-in-chief. From their expert position, the reviewers guide and allow other scientists to disseminate their work in the best possible conditions.
To support our reviewers, we've put together some tips and lists of things to keep in mind when preparing for a review and writing an honest and constructive review.
Before accepting the invitation
When you receive an invitation to review, it is important to consider the following before accepting.
Is the manuscript within my jurisdiction?Consider whether the manuscript appropriately falls within your area of expertise. Otherwise, please decline the invitation and consider helping us by suggesting alternative relevant experts.
I have time;We strive to make our review process efficient, so reviewers are asked to complete their reports within 7 days of accepting the invitation. You should let the editor know if you can't write a review but you can join it at another time.
Do I have a conflict of interest?Once you accept your invitation as a reviewer, you will be asked to complete a short conflict of interest questionnaire to identify any relationships with the manuscript authors that might make peer review unsuitable for you. Conflicts of interest are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may not disqualify, so please disclose all responses in their entirety. You can find more information here.
Response to invitationReviewers are requested to respond to the review invitation as soon as possible. Of course, you can decline a review if you feel you lack the time or expertise, and we always appreciate alternative reviewer recommendations.
If the reviewer believes that 7 days is not enough to complete the review or there is a delay in the deadline after accepting the invitation, they can contact the editorial office. We will be happy to help.

To do
respect the scopeAuthors provide a "contribution to field" statement with the manuscript to explain the intended scope and importance of the article. Focus on what the manuscript is trying to do, even if your background is in a related field. You should avoid suggesting that authors significantly broaden the scope of the manuscript (eg, "only addressed x, should address y") or exclude them from the intended scope of the manuscript.
Focus on learningBe objective: Frontiers discloses author names to reviewers for full transparency; however, reviewers are not asked to rate the author, only the manuscript. Also, you don't need to point out minor typos - our production team will take care of correcting them during typesetting. Our processes ensure that you only have to focus on the investigation itself.
Give constructive feedbackFeedback should aim to suggest reasonable improvements, in a polite and impersonal tone. Show professional courtesy by considering what you would like to receive in your own work. And if it's good, say so, and tell me why!
Note the domain details.Is there research evidence specific to the field in which you work? If so, use your knowledge to tell us what you think about them. This will be helpful to everyone involved in the manuscript review process.
what not to do
Don't be vague or too short.Authors find accurate and detailed feedback extremely helpful, which generally leads to a smooth and timely review process. By contrast, a short report often raises additional questions from the authors. Make sure that the recommendations and decisions are clearly explained. You should make good use of the detailed questionnaire available on the shared evaluation platform to provide a clear evaluation.
Do not omit key points in your initial reportThe initial report must be complete and include all necessary comments in advance. Although future revisions of the document may raise new questions, be sure to include key points in your initial report. Be sure to conclude your report with a clear recommendation for the service editor. You are an expert and your advice is very valuable.
Don't give up on reviewsTo ensure a smooth process for everyone involved, please submit your responses in a timely manner. If you wish to request an extension or withdraw from the review process, you can do so directly on the review forum or contact the editors for assistance. Try to put yourself in the shoes of writers who are eagerly awaiting feedback on their submission.

After peer review: acknowledgment of reviewers
Reviewers who approve a manuscript for publication are credited for their work by including their name in the published article. Names are listed with the author's name both on the published article page and in the final article archives.
Please note, however, that if a reviewer recommends rejection of the manuscript or withdraws from the review process, their name will not be available to the authors and they will not be published with the manuscript.
Regardless of the reviewer's recommendation, after submitting the report, the reviewer will receive an email confirming the work done, including a copy of the report. Although the report itself should not be shared in any public forum, reviewers can use the confirmation email to acknowledge their commitment to the peer review process at their own institution or on other platforms. Your reports will also not be lost if they later recommend rejection or withdraw from the review process.
